Powell River Regional District
This AIA study was completed in advance of proposed developments planned by the Regional District of Powell River to rebuild a caretaker residence and a new concession and associated ancillary infrastructure within a regional park with extensive campground facilites. In 2013 Aquilla Archaeology found archaeological evidence of a large coast Salish village site found within Shelter Point Park. This work identified some of the best known village and house features found in the southern coastal region.
Aquilla Archaeology is continuing to work with the Regional District to preserve the significant areas of the site by clearing through permitted site alteration work, the less intact and disturbed portions of the archaeological site in order to facilitate development in these areas. This next phase of work is scheduled for 2014.
